Green Coffee Market Size in MENA
In 2022, the MENA's green coffee market increased by 7.5% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Green Coffee Production in MENA
In value terms, green coffee production expanded slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Yemen (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of green coffee production, comprising approx. 100% of total volume.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Yemen was relatively modest.
In 2022, the average yield of coffee (green) in MENA shrank to X kg per ha, remaining stable against 2021. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the green coffee yield hit record highs at X kg per ha in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of coffee (green) in MENA totaled X ha, increasing by 2.2% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 6.1% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.
Green Coffee Exports
Exports in MENA
In 2022, overseas shipments of coffee (green) increased by 1.7% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Total exports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +62.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 61% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, green coffee exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Turkey represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 44% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Saudi Arabia (10%), Yemen (8.5%) and Jordan (6.9%). The following exporters - Palestine (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) - together made up 5.5% of total exports.
Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the coffee (green) exports, with a CAGR of +71.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Palestine (+62.4%), Kuwait (+18.9%), the United Arab Emirates (+11.9%) and Saudi Arabia (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Yemen (-11.2%) and Jordan (-12.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+43 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+11 p.p.) and Palestine (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Jordan and Yemen saw its share reduced by -29% and -31.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) emerged as the largest green coffee supplier in MENA, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Yemen ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey stood at +60.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Yemen (-4.8% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+17.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Yemen ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Palestine (+11.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Green Coffee Imports
Imports in MENA
Green coffee imports shrank slightly to X tons in 2022, falling by -4.8% compared with 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, green coffee imports totaled $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +46.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 31%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Algeria (X tons), distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the key importers of coffee (green), together making up 81% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +14.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest green coffee importing markets in MENA were Turkey ($X), Algeria ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), with a combined 46% share of total imports.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +15.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 17% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
