In 2022, cotton (carded or combed) exports in MENA contracted sharply to X tons, with a decrease of -39% against the previous year. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cotton (carded or combed) exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 33%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Turkey dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 77% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Palestine (X tons), achieving an 8.2% share of total exports. Morocco (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Morocco (+72.7%), Palestine (+31.2%) and Bahrain (+12.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +72.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-3.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+15 p.p.), Palestine (+7.4 p.p.), Morocco (+4 p.p.) and Bahrain (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-4.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest cotton (carded or combed) supplier in MENA, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Palestine ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 6.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey stood at +8.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Palestine (+30.9% per year) and Egypt (-2.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 38% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Bahrain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Imports of Cotton (Carded Or Combed)
Imports in MENA
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of cotton (carded or combed) increased by 25% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 102%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cotton (carded or combed) imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 97% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Israel (X tons), distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) represented the main importers of cotton (carded or combed), together achieving 88% of total imports. Jordan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +31.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Israel ($X), Algeria ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 70% share of total imports. Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +30.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, falling by -8.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 27%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
