Cottonseed Market Size in MENA

The MENA's cottonseed market contracted slightly to $X in 2022, reducing by -4.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Cottonseed Production in MENA

In value terms, cottonseed production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of cottonseed production was Turkey (X tons), comprising approx. 80% of total volume. Moreover, cottonseed production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Egypt (X tons), more than tenfold. Iran (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 4.8% share.

In Turkey, cottonseed production declined by an average annual rate of -1.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Egypt (-7.1% per year) and Iran (-5.1% per year).

Exports in MENA

In 2022, shipments abroad of cottonseed increased by 19% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 101% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cottonseed exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 78% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the major exporter of cottonseed in MENA, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 66% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Israel (X tons), committing a 34% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Israel (with a CAGR of +14.9%).

In value terms, the largest cottonseed supplying countries in MENA were Turkey ($X) and Israel ($X).

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 48%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Turkey totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+3.8%).

Cottonseed Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2022, supplies from abroad of cottonseed increased by 5.9% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +49.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, cottonseed imports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +63.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Saudi Arabia represented the largest importer of cottonseed in MENA, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 54% of total imports in 2022. Turkey (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Oman (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 38% share of total imports. Morocco (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cottonseed imports into Saudi Arabia stood at +2.5%. At the same time, Morocco (+196.5%), Turkey (+63.6%), Oman (+32.8%) and the United Arab Emirates (+23.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +196.5% from 2012-2022. Turkey (+18 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+11 p.p.), Oman (+4.7 p.p.) and Morocco (+4.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -35.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cottonseed in MENA, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 12% share.

In Saudi Arabia, cottonseed imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+15.5% per year) and Turkey (+46.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -2.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+0.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
