Exports in MENA

In 2021, the amount of couscous exported in MENA surged to X tons, with an increase of 28% compared with 2020. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, couscous exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +50.3% against 2015 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Morocco represented the largest exporter of couscous in MENA, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 66% of total exports in 2021. Tunisia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Turkey (X tons) and Israel (X tons). All these countries together took near 31% share of total exports. Algeria (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to couscous exports from Morocco stood at +12.8%. At the same time, Turkey (+61.6%) and Israel (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +61.6% from 2012-2021. Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Morocco and Turkey increased by +22 and +5.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest couscous supplier in MENA, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Israel, with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Morocco amounted to +13.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (-3.0% per year) and Israel (+6.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 21%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Couscous Imports

Imports in MENA

Couscous imports soared to X tons in 2021, jumping by 19% compared with the year before. In general, imports recorded a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 169%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, couscous imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw notable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 90%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Libya represented the major importer of couscous in MENA, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 59% of total imports in 2021. Israel (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons). All these countries together took near 33% share of total imports. Qatar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Libya experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of couscous. At the same time, Qatar (+22.1%), the United Arab Emirates (+5.9%), Saudi Arabia (+2.2%) and Israel (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Qatar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +22.1% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates increased by +2.5 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Libya ($X), Israel ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 79% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, which together accounted for a further 13%.

Qatar, with a CAGR of +14.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
