From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of crispbread, rusks and toasted bread decreased by -42.8% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 182% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, crispbread, rusk and toasted bread exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 129% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia represented the major exporter of crispbread, rusks and toasted bread in MENA, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 60% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons), together mixing up a 26% share of total exports. The following exporters - Israel (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) - each resulted at an 8.6% share of total exports.

Exports from Saudi Arabia increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkey (+15.7%), Kuwait (+15.1%), the United Arab Emirates (+13.8%) and Israel (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +15.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+7.6 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Saudi Arabia (-3.6 p.p.) and Egypt (-5.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the largest crispbread, rusk and toasted bread supplier in MENA, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Saudi Arabia amounted to +7.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+13.3% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+17.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a mild decrease. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA

In 2022, purchases abroad of crispbread, rusks and toasted bread decreased by -16.5% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 72% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, crispbread, rusk and toasted bread imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the key importer of crispbread, rusks and toasted bread, constituting 54% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kuwait (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Iraq (X tons), together creating a 30% share of total imports. Israel (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Qatar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the crispbread, rusks and toasted bread imports, with a CAGR of +26.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iraq (+20.4%), Oman (+19.8%), Kuwait (+9.4%), Qatar (+8.6%) and Israel (+7.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Jordan (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+41 p.p.), Oman (+4.1 p.p.) and Iraq (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Jordan (-5.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest crispbread, rusk and toasted bread importing markets in MENA were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Kuwait ($X) and Oman ($X), together comprising 75% of total imports. Israel, Iraq, Jordan and Qatar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.

Iraq, with a CAGR of +23.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 3.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
