Turkey (X tons) remains the largest cucumber and gherkin producing country in MENA, accounting for 41% of total volume. Moreover, cucumber and gherkin production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Iran (X tons), fourfold. Egypt (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 9.5% share.
In Turkey, cucumber and gherkin production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iran (-16.0% per year) and Egypt (-3.3% per year).
In 2022, the average cucumber and gherkin yield in MENA reduced to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -1.9% against the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the yield increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the cucumber and gherkin yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of cucumbers and gherkins in MENA rose to X ha, increasing by 3.4% on the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cucumber and gherkin production reached the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in MENA
In 2022, overseas shipments of cucumbers and gherkins increased by 2.3% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cucumber and gherkin exports reached $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Turkey was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 62% of total exports. Iran (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Morocco (X tons) and Jordan (X tons). All these countries together took near 36% share of total exports.
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Morocco (+13.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +13.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Iran (-9.3%) and Jordan (-19.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Turkey and Morocco increased by +32 and +9.7 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest cucumber and gherkin supplier in MENA, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Jordan, with a 13% share.
In Turkey, cucumber and gherkin exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+17.7% per year) and Jordan (-15.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Cucumber And Gherkin Imports
Imports in MENA
After four years of growth, purchases abroad of cucumbers and gherkins decreased by -2.6% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 125%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, cucumber and gherkin imports reached $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 83% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Iraq prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 85% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Kuwait (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Israel (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.
Iraq was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cucumbers and gherkins imports, with a CAGR of +40.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kuwait (+5.4%), Israel (+4.7%), Bahrain (+3.0%) and Qatar (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Iraq (+76 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Bahrain, Kuwait, Israel, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -2.8%, -3.1%, -3.2%, -5.3% and -7.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Iraq ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cucumbers and gherkins in MENA, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Israel ($X), with an 8.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 4.6% share.
In Iraq, cucumber and gherkin imports increased at an average annual rate of +39.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Israel (+18.7% per year) and Kuwait (+8.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Qatar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+13.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
