In 2021, overseas shipments of currants and gooseberries were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Lebanon was also the fastest-growing in terms of the currants and gooseberries exports, with a CAGR of +45.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tunisia (+18.7%), Oman (+10.5%), Saudi Arabia (+9.3%) and Egypt (+8.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Iran (-19.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Lebanon (+66 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Saudi Arabia (-2 p.p.), Egypt (-5.9 p.p.) and Iran (-52 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Lebanon ($X) remains the largest currant and gooseberry supplier in MENA, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 5.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 3.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Lebanon amounted to +60.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+19.4% per year) and Egypt (-2.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 29%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Currant and gooseberry imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 138% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw a significant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, currant and gooseberry imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 86%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Qatar (X tons) dominates imports structure, together comprising 91% of total imports. The following importers - the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Bahrain (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - together made up 8.1% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Qatar (with a CAGR of +40.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Qatar ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 90% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Qatar, with a CAGR of +39.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -35.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
