In 2021, the MENA's dried or smoked fish market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, dried or smoked fish exports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +47.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 23%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

The United Arab Emirates represented the largest exporter of dried or smoked fish in MENA, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 60% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons) and Turkey (X tons), together making up a 30% share of total exports. The following exporters - Oman (X tons) and Iran (X tons) - together made up 6.9% of total exports.

Exports from the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Iran (+26.7%), Oman (+22.8%) and Morocco (+14.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +26.7% from 2012-2021. Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. The United Arab Emirates (+12 p.p.), Morocco (+8 p.p.), Oman (+3.2 p.p.) and Iran (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Turkey saw its share reduced by -9.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Morocco ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 84% of total exports. These countries were followed by Oman and Iran, which together accounted for a further 6.5%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Iran, with a CAGR of +23.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 20% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 33%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+0.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

For the seventh year in a row, MENA recorded decline in overseas purchases of dried or smoked fish, which decreased by -6.2% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports recorded a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 40%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dried or smoked fish imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 36%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of dried or smoked fish imports in 2021 were Tunisia (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together accounting for 71% of total import. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Kuwait (X tons). All these countries together held near 15% share of total imports. The following importers - Qatar (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) - together made up 6.2% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Israel, with a CAGR of +8.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
