In 2022, the MENA's dry bean market decreased by -3.6% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Djibouti (with a CAGR of +21.6%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average dry bean yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the dry bean yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Dry bean exports declined to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -10.4% on 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 112% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, dry bean exports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 95%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
Exports by Country
Egypt (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) dominates exports structure, together mixing up 90% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), mixing up a 4.9% share of total exports. Djibouti (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +53.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest dry bean supplying countries in MENA were Egypt ($X), Turkey ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together accounting for 96% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +46.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, surging by 3.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw mild growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Egypt ($X per ton) and Turkey ($X per ton), while Djibouti ($X per ton) and the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Dry Bean Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2022, dry bean imports in MENA fell to X tons, shrinking by -14.5% against the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -19.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, dry bean imports shrank to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +7.7% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Turkey (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Iraq (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) represented the major importer of beans (dry) in MENA, comprising 80% of total import. Iran (X tons), Libya (X tons), Israel (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Iraq (with a CAGR of +17.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Turkey ($X), Iraq ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 61% share of total imports.
Iraq, with a CAGR of +17.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 13%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Libya (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
