In 2022, the MENA's exercise book market increased by 19% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. After three years of decline, overseas shipments of exercise books increased by 24% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 34%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, exercise book exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 39%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tunisia was the largest exporter of exercise books in MENA, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 51% of total exports in 2022. Palestine (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 28% share, followed by Lebanon (11%). The following exporters - the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - together made up 6.9% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +37.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X), Palestine ($X) and Lebanon ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 91% of total exports. Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.7%.

Oman, with a CAGR of +29.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Exercise Book Imports

Imports in MENA

For the third consecutive year, MENA recorded decline in supplies from abroad of exercise books, which decreased by -13% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, exercise book imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the seven major importers of exercise books, namely Iraq, Djibouti, Libya, the United Arab Emirates, Israel, Yemen and Egypt, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Qatar (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Libya (with a CAGR of +34.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Iraq ($X), Israel ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 52% share of total imports. Djibouti, Libya, Yemen, Egypt and Qatar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

Libya, with a CAGR of +29.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
