The MENA's expanded clays market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, saw a pronounced decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Expanded Clays Production in MENA
In value terms, expanded clays production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 30%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in MENA
In 2021, overseas shipments of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, expanded clays exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a tangible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 76%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Turkey (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together creating 87% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Iran (X tons), creating an 8.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +19.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Iran ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 94% share of total exports.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +13.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Expanded Clays Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2021, overseas purchases of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag decreased by -29.1% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 106% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, expanded clays imports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a modest expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 34%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 27% of total imports. Kuwait (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Oman (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Israel (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and Qatar (X tons). All these countries together took near 65% share of total imports.
Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Syrian Arab Republic (+65.7%), Oman (+45.4%), Kuwait (+25.4%), Israel (+8.0%), Turkey (+2.8%) and Algeria (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Syrian Arab Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +65.7% from 2012-2021. Bahrain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Morocco (-3.1%) and Qatar (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kuwait (+9.3 p.p.), Oman (+8.1 p.p.), Syrian Arab Republic (+7.5 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+6.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Turkey, Bahrain, Algeria, Morocco and Qatar saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -3.2%, -3.5%, -6.9% and -9.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest expanded clays importing markets in MENA were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Oman ($X), with a combined 46% share of total imports.
Oman, with a CAGR of +35.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, surging by 34% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 55% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
