Filter Block Market Size in MENA

After five years of growth, the MENA's filter block market decreased by -54.6% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a notable increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Filter Block Production in MENA

In value terms, filter block production surged to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 334%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in MENA

In 2022, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp, when their volume decreased by -11.1% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, saw moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 69%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, filter block exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 344%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) was the main exporter of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp, mixing up 64% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Turkey (14%).

Exports from Syrian Arab Republic increased at an average annual rate of +16.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkey (+32.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +32.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-9.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Syrian Arab Republic and Turkey increased by +45 and +13 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest filter block supplier in MENA, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt amounted to +15.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+36.1% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (+16.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 162%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+27.7%).

Filter Block Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2022, the amount of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp imported in MENA shrank significantly to X tons, reducing by -54.4% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 167%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, filter block imports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 87%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Turkey represented the major importer of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp in MENA, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 61% of total imports in 2022. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Tunisia (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and Israel (X tons). All these countries together held near 27% share of total imports. The following importers - Algeria (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) - each reached a 4.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to filter block imports into Turkey stood at +6.7%. At the same time, Bahrain (+28.0%), the United Arab Emirates (+20.9%), Algeria (+18.6%), Tunisia (+13.5%) and Israel (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +28.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-2.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+46 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+9.5 p.p.), Tunisia (+5.8 p.p.), Bahrain (+4.8 p.p.), Israel (+3.6 p.p.) and Algeria (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp in MENA, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Algeria, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey stood at +5.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+18.2% per year) and Algeria (+29.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 131% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Bahrain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+9.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
