Over the period under review, exports saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 142%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, battered fish fillet exports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 187% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Morocco prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Israel (X tons), comprising an 8.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to battered fish fillet exports from Morocco stood at +23.2%. At the same time, Israel (+26.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +26.1% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Morocco and Israel increased by +15 and +2.7 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest battered fish fillet supplier in MENA, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with a 9.2% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Morocco amounted to +18.6%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -16.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Morocco stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+7.6%).

Imports in MENA
Battered fish fillet imports reduced dramatically to X tons in 2021, declining by -21.4% on the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a sharp decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 28%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, battered fish fillet imports fell markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Israel (X tons) represented the largest importers of fish fillets in batter or breadcrumbs in MENA, together finishing at approx. 65% of total imports. Iran (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 5.4% share, followed by Lebanon (5.4%). Bahrain (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Yemen (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +12.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Israel ($X) and Lebanon ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 73% of total imports. These countries were followed by Iran, Bahrain, Kuwait, Algeria, Yemen and Tunisia, which together accounted for a further 20%.
Bahrain, with a CAGR of +9.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded mild growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, leveling off in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Yemen (+9.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
