Flat Glass Market Size in MENA

After four years of growth, the MENA's flat glass market decreased by -0.6% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Flat Glass Production in MENA

In value terms, flat glass production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

After three years of decline, overseas shipments of flat glass increased by 41% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports posted a strong expansion. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, flat glass exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Iran (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented roughly 73% of total exports in 2021. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 10% share, followed by Algeria (7.1%). The following exporters - Egypt (X tons) and Israel (X tons) - together made up 6.4% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Iran (with a CAGR of +19.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest flat glass supplying countries in MENA were Saudi Arabia ($X), Turkey ($X) and Iran ($X), together comprising 68% of total exports.

Iran, with a CAGR of +18.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA

In 2021, imports of flat glass in MENA rose markedly to X tons, growing by 5.8% compared with 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 21%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, flat glass imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Turkey was the key importer of flat glass in MENA, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 27% of total imports in 2021. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Iraq (10%), Morocco (7.2%) and Qatar (4.5%). The following importers - Algeria (X tons), Israel (X tons), Yemen (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons) - together made up 29% of total imports.

Imports into Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Iraq (+14.7%), Djibouti (+9.4%), Qatar (+8.6%), Israel (+7.5%), Yemen (+6.1%), Oman (+5.2%), the United Arab Emirates (+4.7%), Morocco (+4.0%), Kuwait (+1.6%) and Tunisia (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +14.7% from 2012-2021. Saudi Arabia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Algeria (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Iraq (+5.8 p.p.) and Turkey (+5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Saudi Arabia (-1.8 p.p.) and Algeria (-2.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Iraq ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 48% of total imports. These countries were followed by Morocco, Djibouti, Qatar, Israel, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Algeria, Tunisia and Oman, which together accounted for a further 40%.

Djibouti, with a CAGR of +26.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
