In 2021, the MENA's fish meals and pellet market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fish meals and pellet production dropped slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MENA
For the third year in a row, MENA recorded growth in shipments abroad of flours, meals and pellets of fish, which increased by 11% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports showed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 108%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, fish meals and pellet exports totaled $X in 2021. Total exports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -16.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 56%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Yemen represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), creating a 13% share of total exports. The following exporters - Bahrain (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) - each recorded a 3.9% share of total exports.
Yemen was also the fastest-growing in terms of the flours, meals and pellets of fish exports, with a CAGR of +24.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Oman (+23.4%) and Bahrain (+17.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Yemen and Oman increased by +30 and +4.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Yemen ($X) remains the largest fish meals and pellet supplier in MENA, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Bahrain, with a 7.7% share.
In Yemen, fish meals and pellet exports increased at an average annual rate of +10.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Oman (+1.4% per year) and Bahrain (+18.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price faced a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bahrain (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Flours, Meals And Pellets Of Fish
Imports in MENA
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of flours, meals and pellets of fish increased by 112% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fish meals and pellet imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Egypt (X tons) represented the key importer of flours, meals and pellets of fish, comprising 50% of total imports. Israel (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 35% share of total imports. The following importers - Iraq (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 5.4% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +35.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Israel ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported flours, meals and pellets of fish in MENA, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 7.5% share.
In Israel, fish meals and pellet imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+12.4% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+4.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -14.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 52%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+10.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
