In 2021, the MENA's market for frozen crabs and crabs meat increased by 7.2% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a deep contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, frozen crab and crab meat production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen crab and crab meat exports declined slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 65%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Bahrain (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) represented roughly 96% of total exports in 2021.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tunisia (with a CAGR of +72.0%).

In value terms, the largest frozen crab and crab meat supplying countries in MENA were Bahrain ($X) and Tunisia ($X).

Among the main exporting countries, Tunisia, with a CAGR of +77.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -2.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 12%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Bahrain amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+3.2%).

Imports in MENA

In 2021, purchases abroad of frozen crabs and crabs meat increased by 4.3% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +30.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 66%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen crab and crab meat imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the major importer of frozen crabs and crabs meat in MENA, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 48% of total imports in 2021. Iran (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Qatar (7%), Algeria (6.1%), Egypt (5.5%) and Kuwait (5.1%). Israel (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to frozen crab and crab meat imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at +6.1%. At the same time, Iran (+69.7%), Qatar (+30.1%) and Kuwait (+13.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +69.7% from 2012-2021. Israel experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-5.4%) and Algeria (-10.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait increased by +13, +8.8, +6.1 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported frozen crabs and crabs meat in MENA, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Qatar ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Iran, with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates amounted to +7.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Qatar (+31.9% per year) and Iran (+57.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 72% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a strong increase. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+10.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
