Candied Fruit Market Size in MENA

In 2021, the MENA's candied fruit market increased by 7.4% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +9.5% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Candied Fruit Production in MENA

In value terms, candied fruit production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -9.6% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Egypt (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Iraq (X tons), together accounting for 51% of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +26.6%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in MENA

In 2021, shipments abroad of candied fruits was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports enjoyed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, candied fruit exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Lebanon (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) represented roughly 67% of total exports in 2021. Turkey (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Iran (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 24% share of total exports. Oman (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Iran (with a CAGR of +20.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest candied fruit supplying countries in MENA were Egypt ($X), Turkey ($X) and Lebanon ($X), with a combined 81% share of total exports.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +22.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA

In 2021, purchases abroad of candied fruits increased by 23% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, candied fruit imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the key importer of candied fruits, generating 35% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), Israel (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together achieving a 48% share of total imports. Kuwait (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+29.3%), Turkey (+19.2%), Kuwait (+11.0%) and Israel (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +29.3% from 2012-2021. Oman experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Iran (-1.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+13 p.p.), Turkey (+7.5 p.p.), Morocco (+4.7 p.p.) and Kuwait (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Iran and Oman saw its share reduced by -1.8% and -1.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest candied fruit importing markets in MENA were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Israel ($X) and Iran ($X), with a combined 64% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Oman, Morocco, Kuwait and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 18%.

Morocco, with a CAGR of +27.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
