Garlic Market Size in MENA
In 2022, after four years of growth, there was decline in the MENA's garlic market, when its value decreased by -4% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
Garlic Production in MENA
In value terms, garlic production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Egypt (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Iran (X tons), with a combined 80% share of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Algeria (with a CAGR of +9.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2022, the average yield of garlic in MENA plummeted to X tons per ha, which is down by -15.5% against 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 37%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha, and then dropped notably in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of garlic were harvested in MENA; increasing by 17% against 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to garlic production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Garlic Exports
Exports in MENA
In 2022, shipments abroad of garlic decreased by -7.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 57%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, garlic exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Egypt was the largest exporter of garlic in MENA, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 63% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Iran (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), together creating a 31% share of total exports. The following exporters - the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) - each amounted to a 4.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to garlic exports from Egypt stood at +7.6%. At the same time, Jordan (+40.9%), Syrian Arab Republic (+39.2%), Turkey (+29.3%) and Iran (+10.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Jordan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +40.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-10.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+8.2 p.p.), Egypt (+6.4 p.p.), Iran (+5 p.p.), Syrian Arab Republic (+4.9 p.p.) and Jordan (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -10.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest garlic supplier in MENA, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Iran, with a 9.4% share.
In Egypt, garlic exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+11.1% per year) and Iran (+4.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 1.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 24% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+23.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Garlic Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2022, overseas purchases of garlic decreased by -0.8% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -12.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 26%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, garlic imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented the key importers of garlic in 2022, recording near 28% and 25% of total imports, respectively. Yemen (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Kuwait (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Morocco (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 27% share of total imports. Qatar (X tons), Lebanon (X tons), Israel (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Yemen (with a CAGR of +9.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Oman ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 55% of total imports. Israel, Kuwait, Morocco, Yemen, Qatar, Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.
Israel, with a CAGR of +14.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -5.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
