The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
In value terms, gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +52.4% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Turkey was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 63% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 22% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle exports from Turkey stood at +5.6%. At the same time, Bahrain (+66.9%), Egypt (+5.8%) and Oman (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +66.9% from 2012-2022. The United Arab Emirates experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-2.4%) and Saudi Arabia (-3.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+13 p.p.) and Bahrain (+5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -2%, -2.9% and -5.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle supplier in MENA, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Bahrain, with a 6.5% share.
In Turkey, gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle exports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+6.7% per year) and Bahrain (+70.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+6.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA
In 2022, overseas purchases of gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles decreased by -6.2% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 16%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle imports fell to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
Iraq (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) represented the largest importers of gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles in 2022, amounting to approx. 22% and 16% of total imports, respectively. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), Libya (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Oman (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 36% share of total imports. Jordan (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Palestine (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Qatar (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +18.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Iraq ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 41% share of total imports. Israel, Yemen, Libya, Kuwait, Jordan, Oman, Qatar, Morocco, Palestine and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 50%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +17.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -5.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
