After two years of decline, overseas shipments of granules, chippings and powder of monumental stone increased by 80% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 120%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, monumental stone granules and powder exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 182%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Turkey (X tons) was the key exporter of granules, chippings and powder of monumental stone, generating 54% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Iran (X tons) and Israel (X tons), together committing a 36% share of total exports. The following exporters - Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Palestine (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - together made up 8.5% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to monumental stone granules and powder exports from Turkey stood at +16.0%. At the same time, Tunisia (+73.6%), Palestine (+71.4%), Israel (+63.1%), Egypt (+40.5%), Syrian Arab Republic (+33.0%) and Iran (+22.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +73.6% from 2012-2021. Iran (+13 p.p.), Turkey (+9.6 p.p.), Israel (+8.4 p.p.), Palestine (+2.4 p.p.), Syrian Arab Republic (+2 p.p.), Egypt (+1.6 p.p.) and Tunisia (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest monumental stone granules and powder supplier in MENA, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Iran ($X), with a 6% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 5.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey amounted to +13.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iran (+11.9% per year) and Tunisia (+40.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 69% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Granules, Chippings And Powder Of Monumental Stone
Imports in MENA
For the third consecutive year, MENA recorded growth in purchases abroad of granules, chippings and powder of monumental stone, which increased by 15% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by +0.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 83% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, monumental stone granules and powder imports fell slightly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 34%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
Israel dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 57% of total imports in 2021. Morocco (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Algeria (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Oman (X tons). All these countries together took near 27% share of total imports. The following importers - Iraq (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) - each accounted for a 7.8% share of total imports.
Imports into Israel increased at an average annual rate of +18.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Oman (+64.8%), Iraq (+49.5%), Algeria (+46.6%), Morocco (+22.1%) and the United Arab Emirates (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +64.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-6.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Israel, Algeria, Oman, Morocco and Iraq increased by +29, +6.4, +5.6, +5.1 and +3.7 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Israel ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported granules, chippings and powder of monumental stone in MENA, comprising 31% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 14% share.
In Israel, monumental stone granules and powder imports increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (-2.5% per year) and Morocco (+20.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, declining by -14.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 25%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
