Grape Market Size in MENA
In 2022, the MENA's grape market decreased by -33% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. In general, consumption recorded a noticeable shrinkage. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Grape Production in MENA
In value terms, grape production contracted sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 8.9%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Turkey (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of grape production, comprising approx. 48% of total volume. Moreover, grape production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Iran (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Algeria (X tons), with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Turkey was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iran (-2.1% per year) and Algeria (+0.9% per year).
The average grape yield shrank to X tons per ha in 2022, falling by -6.3% on the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by 6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the grape yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of grapes production in MENA reduced to X ha, which is down by -7% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area saw a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 7.5% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the grape harvested area failed to regain momentum.
Grape Exports
Exports in MENA
In 2022, approx. X tons of grapes were exported in MENA; with a decrease of -13% compared with the year before. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, grape exports shrank to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 29%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Turkey (X tons) was the largest exporter of grapes, making up 54% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons), together creating a 37% share of total exports. Iran (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of grapes. At the same time, Lebanon (+23.8%), Iran (+2.2%) and Morocco (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lebanon emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +23.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Lebanon (+9.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Turkey (-2.9 p.p.) and Egypt (-5.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest grape supplying countries in MENA were Egypt ($X), Turkey ($X) and Lebanon ($X), together accounting for 94% of total exports.
Lebanon, with a CAGR of +23.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 4.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 7.2%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Grape Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2022, the amount of grapes imported in MENA reduced dramatically to X tons, waning by -24.1% against 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +12.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 35%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined significantly in the following year.
In value terms, grape imports reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Saudi Arabia represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 40% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Oman (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Israel (X tons), together constituting a 43% share of total imports. The following importers - Qatar (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) - together made up 7.2% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Iraq (with a CAGR of +55.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Israel ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 68% of total imports. Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and Iraq lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.
Among the main importing countries, Iraq, with a CAGR of +46.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 40% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
