The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +64.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, animal guts exports reduced to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +56.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Iran (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) represented roughly 96% of total exports in 2022. Lebanon (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +21.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Iran ($X), Turkey ($X) and Morocco ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 82% share of total exports. Egypt and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

Among the main exporting countries, Egypt, with a CAGR of +15.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -7.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

For the third consecutive year, MENA recorded decline in overseas purchases of guts, bladders and stomachs of animals, which decreased by -2.8% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, animal guts imports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 28%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Morocco was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 67% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons) and Algeria (X tons), together committing a 19% share of total imports. The following importers - Egypt (X tons), Lebanon (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) - together made up 11% of total imports.

Imports into Morocco increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Algeria (+41.5%) and Turkey (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +41.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kuwait (-2.5%), the United Arab Emirates (-3.9%), Lebanon (-9.8%) and Egypt (-16.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+25 p.p.), Algeria (+5.4 p.p.) and Turkey (+4.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Lebanon and Egypt saw its share reduced by -5.7% and -18.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported guts, bladders and stomachs of animals in MENA, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Morocco was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+1.1% per year) and Algeria (+52.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 5.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
