In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of gypsum and anhydrite, when their volume increased by 10% to X tons. Overall, exports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 116% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite exports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 77%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined significantly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Oman was the main exporter of gypsum and anhydrite in MENA, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 50% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Iran (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Turkey (X tons), together comprising a 46% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to gypsum and anhydrite exports from Oman stood at +16.6%. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+61.7%), Egypt (+25.9%), Morocco (+22.1%), Turkey (+14.6%) and Iran (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +61.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+14 p.p.), Oman (+11 p.p.), Morocco (+3.4 p.p.) and Egypt (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Iran (-26.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Oman ($X) remains the largest gypsum and anhydrite supplier in MENA, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Iran, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Oman amounted to +13.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+43.4% per year) and Iran (+1.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -23.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 31% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell sharply in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Gypsum And Anhydrite Imports
Imports in MENA
Gypsum and anhydrite imports fell sharply to X tons in 2021, declining by -24.6% compared with the year before. Overall, imports saw a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 36%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite imports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 39% of total imports. Qatar (X tons) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Israel (16%), Lebanon (9.1%) and Kuwait (5.3%). The following importers - Turkey (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) - each accounted for a 5.4% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Qatar (with a CAGR of +15.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, Israel ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gypsum and anhydrite in MENA, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Qatar, with a 9.3% share.
In Israel, gypsum and anhydrite imports increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-2.5% per year) and Qatar (+0.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 9.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
