Plaster Market Size in MENA
The MENA's plaster market shrank to $X in 2022, reducing by -9.1% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +24.4% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Plaster Production in MENA
In value terms, plaster production shrank sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the production volume increased by 48%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Plaster Exports
Exports in MENA
In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of plaster, when their volume decreased by -13.9% to X tons. Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, plaster exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
Turkey represented the major exporter of plaster in MENA, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 51% of total exports in 2022. Tunisia (X tons) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the United Arab Emirates (14%), Morocco (6.7%) and Iran (6.3%). The following exporters - Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - each resulted at a 4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to plaster exports from Turkey stood at +1.9%. At the same time, Oman (+72.9%), the United Arab Emirates (+53.2%), Morocco (+16.2%), Iran (+14.4%), Tunisia (+12.7%) and Saudi Arabia (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +72.9% from 2012-2022. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+13 p.p.), Tunisia (+8.1 p.p.), Morocco (+3.9 p.p.), Iran (+3.3 p.p.) and Oman (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Turkey (-27.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest plaster supplier in MENA, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 7.8% share.
In Turkey, plaster exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+12.9% per year) and Morocco (+12.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Plaster Imports
Imports in MENA
Plaster imports shrank slightly to X tons in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, plaster imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Iraq represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 35% of total imports. Israel (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Kuwait (X tons), Libya (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 51% share of total imports. Turkey (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +11.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Israel ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported plaster in MENA, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Israel amounted to +10.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+12.1% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-5.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -4.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 67%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
