In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the MENA's hemp tow market, when its value decreased by -30.1% to $X. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.
Hemp Tow Production in MENA
In value terms, hemp tow production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 9.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Iran (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of hemp tow production, accounting for 64% of total volume. Moreover, hemp tow production in Iran exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Egypt (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), with a 6.3% share.
In Iran, hemp tow production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+1.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+1.0% per year).
The average hemp tow yield was estimated at X tons per ha in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. Overall, the yield, however, showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the yield increased by 1.9%. Over the period under review, the hemp tow yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of hemp tow were harvested in MENA; approximately reflecting 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to hemp tow production reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Hemp Tow Exports
Exports in MENA
In 2022, approx. X tons of hemp tow were exported in MENA; picking up by 18% against 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 198% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, hemp tow exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 193% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) represented the largest exporters of hemp tow in MENA, together comprising 86% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), committing an 11% share of total exports. Iran (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +22.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, Egypt ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Turkey ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 98% share of total exports.
The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +20.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+6.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Hemp Tow Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2022, overseas purchases of hemp tow decreased by -25.8% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 157% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, hemp tow imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 145% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
Turkey prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 86% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Israel (X tons), achieving an 8.7% share of total imports. Morocco (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hemp tow imports, with a CAGR of +79.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Israel (+52.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Morocco (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Turkey and Israel increased by +85 and +8.1 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hemp tow in MENA, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with an 8.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey totaled +82.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Israel (+45.4% per year) and Morocco (-0.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, waning by -7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 77% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
