Ink Market Size in MENA

In 2021, the MENA's ink market increased by 13% to $X, rising for the fourth consecutive year after four years of decline. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Ink Production in MENA

In value terms, ink production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Ink Exports

Exports in MENA

In 2021, the amount of inks (excluding printing ink) exported in MENA amounted to X tons, with an increase of 1.9% on the previous year. Overall, exports, however, recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 40%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ink exports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 44% of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Israel (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 52% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the inks (excluding printing ink) exports, with a CAGR of +6.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Jordan (-11.3%), the United Arab Emirates (-12.6%), Egypt (-16.1%) and Israel (-19.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey and Saudi Arabia increased by +32 and +11 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Israel ($X), Turkey ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 85% of total exports.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +6.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, waning by -4.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+6.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Ink Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of inks (excluding printing ink), when their volume increased by 35% to X tons. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced reduction. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ink imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) represented roughly 46% of total imports in 2021. Iran (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by Egypt (X tons) and Yemen (X tons). All these countries together held near 24% share of total imports. The following importers - Algeria (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons) - together made up 22% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Djibouti (with a CAGR of +20.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported inks (excluding printing ink) in MENA, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Iran, with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates totaled +7.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+5.7% per year) and Iran (-0.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 20% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Djibouti ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
