In 2022, shipments abroad of instruments using optical radiations decreased by -2.4% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 75%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
In value terms, optical radiation instruments exports amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 93%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Israel dominates exports structure, reaching X units, which was near 93% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Turkey (X units) and the United Arab Emirates (X units) - together made up 5.3% of total exports.
Israel was also the fastest-growing in terms of the instruments using optical radiations exports, with a CAGR of +35.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+4.9%) and Turkey (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Israel increased by +43 percentage points.
In value terms, Israel ($X) remains the largest optical radiation instruments supplier in MENA, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 1.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Israel stood at +34.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+9.7% per year) and Turkey (-2.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 6.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per unit), while Turkey ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in MENA
In 2022, approx. X units of instruments using optical radiations were imported in MENA; waning by -6% against the year before. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -11.0% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, optical radiation instruments imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +68.1% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Turkey (X units) and the United Arab Emirates (X units) represented the key importers of instruments using optical radiations in MENA, together resulting at near 37% of total imports. Algeria (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Iraq (8.4%), Israel (7%), Iran (5.4%), Libya (5.1%) and Morocco (4.5%). Qatar (X units), Oman (X units), Kuwait (X units), Tunisia (X units) and Bahrain (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Qatar (with a CAGR of +24.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Israel ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 46% of total imports. Iraq, Algeria, Qatar, Iran, Libya, Kuwait, Morocco, Oman, Tunisia and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Qatar, with a CAGR of +18.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per unit, growing by 3.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per unit), while Algeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
