In 2021, the MENA's kaolin market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, showed a mild descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the amount of kaolin and kaolinic clays exported in MENA soared to X tons, picking up by 90% against 2020. Over the period under review, exports saw buoyant growth. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country
Turkey represented the major exporter of kaolin and kaolinic clays in MENA, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 78% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), achieving a 15% share of total exports. The following exporters - Iran (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) - each accounted for a 5.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to kaolin exports from Turkey stood at +22.5%. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+25.1%), Morocco (+5.2%) and Egypt (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +25.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Iran (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey increased by +35 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest kaolin supplier in MENA, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey stood at +21.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+4.9% per year) and Egypt (+5.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Kaolin Imports

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of kaolin and kaolinic clays increased by 50% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, kaolin imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Turkey (X tons), distantly followed by Algeria (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) were the major importers of kaolin and kaolinic clays, together generating 88% of total imports. The following importers - Morocco (X tons) and Iran (X tons) - each reached a 6% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Algeria (with a CAGR of +18.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported kaolin and kaolinic clays in MENA, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 12% share.
In Turkey, kaolin imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (+1.7% per year) and Egypt (-5.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -7.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.
