Kola Nut Market Size in MENA

The MENA's kola nut market surged to $X in 2022, increasing by 159% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed significant growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Kola Nut Production in MENA

In value terms, kola nut production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 8.4% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Iran (X tons) remains the largest kola nut producing country in MENA, comprising approx. 42% of total volume. Moreover, kola nut production in Iran exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), twofold. Israel (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Iran was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: the United Arab Emirates (+1.0% per year) and Israel (+1.8% per year).

Exports in MENA

For the third consecutive year, MENA recorded decline in overseas shipments of kola nuts, which decreased by -66.6% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports faced a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 103%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, kola nut exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the key exporter of kola nuts in MENA, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 76% of total exports in 2022. Morocco (X kg) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Bahrain (10%).

The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the kola nuts exports, with a CAGR of +26.3% from 2012 to 2022. Bahrain (-29.6%) and Morocco (-73.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+74 p.p.) and Morocco (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Bahrain saw its share reduced by -83.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Bahrain ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 99% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +17.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 76% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a measured increase. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+190.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA

In 2022, kola nut imports in MENA skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 145% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 1,818% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, kola nut imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 2,670% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Bahrain prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 97% of total imports in 2022. Yemen (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Bahrain was also the fastest-growing in terms of the kola nuts imports, with a CAGR of +125.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Yemen (+23.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Bahrain increased by +97 percentage points.

In value terms, Bahrain ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported kola nuts in MENA, comprising 99% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Yemen ($X), with a 0.3% share of total imports.
