Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bovine and equine leather exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Turkey prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 65% of total exports in 2021. Egypt (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Algeria (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons). All these countries together held near 27% share of total exports. The following exporters - Iraq (X tons) and Israel (X tons) - each resulted at a 3.2% share of total exports.

Exports from Turkey decreased at an average annual rate of -1.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+6.3%), Israel (+2.4%) and Saudi Arabia (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +6.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Algeria (-1.8%), Egypt (-12.4%) and Iraq (-17.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+16 p.p.), Morocco (+3.6 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (+2 p.p.) and Algeria (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Iraq and Egypt saw its share reduced by -4.7% and -11% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest bovine and equine leather supplier in MENA, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey amounted to +5.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-0.9% per year) and Morocco (-0.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, falling by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+13.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Leather of Bovine and Equine Animals

Imports in MENA

In 2021, the amount of leather of bovine and equine animals imported in MENA dropped to X tons, waning by -2% compared with the previous year. In general, imports showed a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bovine and equine leather imports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Turkey was the key importer of leather of bovine and equine animals in MENA, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 62% of total imports in 2021. Tunisia (X tons) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Morocco (8.5%). The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Palestine (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Israel (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to bovine and equine leather imports into Turkey stood at -6.8%. At the same time, Palestine (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Palestine emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +4.3% from 2012-2021. Iran experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-4.8%), Morocco (-6.1%), Tunisia (-6.9%) and Israel (-8.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Palestine (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Turkey saw its share reduced by -3.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest bovine and equine leather importing markets in MENA were Tunisia ($X), Turkey ($X) and Morocco ($X), with a combined 85% share of total imports. The United Arab Emirates, Israel, Palestine and Iran lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Iran, with a CAGR of +3.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 7.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
