Leek Market Size in MENA

The MENA's leek market contracted slightly to $X in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a mild descent. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Leek Production in MENA

In value terms, leek production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 44%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Turkey (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of leek production, comprising approx. 84% of total volume. Moreover, leek production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Saudi Arabia (X tons), more than tenfold. Iran (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 4.1% share.

In Turkey, leek production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Saudi Arabia (+1.8% per year) and Iran (-9.0% per year).

The average leek yield contracted to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately mirroring 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 7.4%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the leek yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in MENA totaled X ha, with an increase of 2.8% compared with 2021. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Leek Exports

Exports in MENA

Leek exports declined markedly to X tons in 2022, dropping by -53.4% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 185%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leek exports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Turkey (X tons) represented the main exporter of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, generating 63% of total exports. Morocco (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Lebanon (7.4%) and Iran (5.7%). The following exporters - Oman (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) - each reached a 7.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to leek exports from Turkey stood at -4.6%. At the same time, Oman (+40.8%), Iran (+32.5%), Morocco (+17.9%) and Lebanon (+7.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +40.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-9.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+11 p.p.), Iran (+5.4 p.p.), Lebanon (+4.7 p.p.) and Oman (+3.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt and Turkey saw its share reduced by -3.2% and -8.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest leek supplier in MENA, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Lebanon, with an 11% share.

In Morocco, leek exports increased at an average annual rate of +34.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (-4.0% per year) and Lebanon (+13.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 28% against the previous year. Export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, leek export price decreased by -5.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 46%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+14.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Leek Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2022, purchases abroad of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables decreased by -5.9% to X tons, falling for the seventh consecutive year after four years of growth. Overall, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 4,089%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, leek imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 4,494% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Qatar (X tons), distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) were the key importers of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, together committing 89% of total imports. Djibouti (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Yemen (with a CAGR of +60.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Qatar ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 87% of total imports. Kuwait, Djibouti, Bahrain and Yemen lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.7%.

Among the main importing countries, Yemen, with a CAGR of +51.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -3.9% against the previous year. Import price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, leek import price increased by +31.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 51%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
