Lettuce And Chicory Market Size in MENA

The MENA's lettuce and chicory market expanded modestly to $X in 2022, surging by 2.9% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Lettuce And Chicory Production in MENA

In value terms, lettuce and chicory production expanded modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Turkey (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), with a combined 77% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +2.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average yield of lettuce and chicory in MENA declined modestly to X tons per ha, standing approx. at 2021. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the lettuce and chicory yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then fell in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of lettuce and chicory production in MENA totaled X ha, approximately mirroring the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a mild reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the harvested area increased by 6.8%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to lettuce and chicory production attained the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in MENA

In 2022, the amount of lettuce and chicory exported in MENA reduced sharply to X tons, which is down by -28.8% on 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 35%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Iran (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) dominates exports structure, together making up 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Lebanon (X tons), constituting a 4.5% share of total exports. Tunisia (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Iran (with a CAGR of +19.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Iran ($X) and Lebanon ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 63% of total exports. Jordan, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +16.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 2.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+17.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Lettuce And Chicory Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2022, approx. X tons of lettuce and chicory were imported in MENA; therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +4.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Saudi Arabia was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 42% of total imports. Qatar (X tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kuwait (14%), the United Arab Emirates (13%), Oman (7.9%) and Bahrain (5%).

Imports into Saudi Arabia increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Oman (+24.1%), Qatar (+8.4%) and Bahrain (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +24.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-4.2%) and Kuwait (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Saudi Arabia (+18 p.p.), Oman (+6.7 p.p.), Qatar (+6.6 p.p.) and Bahrain (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait saw its share reduced by -11.6% and -16.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest lettuce and chicory importing markets in MENA were Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Kuwait ($X), with a combined 78% share of total imports. Qatar, Bahrain and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.

Among the main importing countries, Oman, with a CAGR of +17.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
