The MENA's lignite market reduced slightly to $X in 2022, declining by -4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a strong expansion. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lignite production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a prominent expansion. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of lignites exported in MENA shrank sharply to X tons, waning by -33.7% against the year before. Overall, exports saw a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 231% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lignite exports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a measured expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 305%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Egypt represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 87% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), committing a 12% share of total exports.
Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lignites exports, with a CAGR of +14.9% from 2012 to 2022. Turkey (-20.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Egypt increased by +71 percentage points.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest lignite supplier in MENA, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 4.1% share of total exports.
In Egypt, lignite exports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -4.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 183%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Turkey totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+10.3%).
Lignite Imports
Imports in MENA
Lignite imports shrank to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -7.3% on 2021 figures. In general, imports recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 74% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lignite imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 145%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Syrian Arab Republic was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 63% of total imports. Libya (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Israel (7.4%). Oman (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lignite imports into Syrian Arab Republic stood at +4.8%. At the same time, Israel (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +5.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-2.2%), Libya (-3.3%), Oman (-7.5%) and the United Arab Emirates (-9.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Syrian Arab Republic (+35 p.p.) and Israel (+4.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Oman and the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -2.3% and -2.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest lignite importing markets in MENA were Oman ($X), Syrian Arab Republic ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together comprising 70% of total imports. Libya, Israel and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.
Israel, with a CAGR of +5.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 3.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 59% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+8.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
