Linseed Production in MENA
In value terms, linseed production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 38% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of linseed production was Egypt (X tons), comprising approx. 60% of total volume. Moreover, linseed production in Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), twofold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Egypt totaled +9.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+1.0% per year) and Tunisia (+2.8% per year).
In 2022, the average linseed yield in MENA soared to X tons per ha, with an increase of 34% compared with the previous year. The yield indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, linseed yield decreased by -27.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 98%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the linseed yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the linseed harvested area in MENA dropped to X ha, with a decrease of -6.7% compared with the previous year. The total harvested area indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, linseed harvested area increased by +7.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to linseed production reached the maximum at X ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MENA
In 2022, shipments abroad of linseed increased by 71% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, exports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 601% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, linseed exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 521%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Turkey was the major exporter of linseed in MENA, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 82% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), constituting a 13% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the linseed exports, with a CAGR of +72.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+19.1%) and Egypt (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Turkey (+75 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the United Arab Emirates and Egypt saw its share reduced by -35.2% and -35.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest linseed supplier in MENA, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.
In Turkey, linseed exports expanded at an average annual rate of +82.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+13.8% per year) and Egypt (+12.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 51% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+5.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Linseed Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2022, the amount of linseed imported in MENA shrank slightly to X tons, which is down by -4% on the previous year. Overall, imports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 286% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, linseed imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 183%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Turkey (X tons) was the main importer of linseed, comprising 74% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), committing an 11% share of total imports. The following importers - Israel (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Iran (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to linseed imports into Turkey stood at -8.2%. At the same time, Algeria (+25.3%), the United Arab Emirates (+9.6%), Morocco (+3.3%) and Israel (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +25.3% from 2012-2022. Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Iran (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Egypt, Israel, Morocco and Algeria increased by +5.8, +2.4, +1.9 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported linseed in MENA, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Israel, with a 5.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey totaled -3.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+3.6% per year) and Israel (+7.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
