The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 241%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences decreased by -3.6% to X tons, falling for the fifth consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 124% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 141% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) dominates exports structure, together comprising 78% of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) held a 6.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Morocco (6.7%). Egypt (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +20.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) emerged as the largest manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences supplier in MENA, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 12% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports increased at an average annual rate of +13.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+18.2% per year) and Morocco (+2.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 33% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+9.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Manufactured Tobacco, Extracts And Essences

Imports in MENA

In 2021, purchases abroad of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences was finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 17%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Turkey represented the key importer of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences in MENA, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 53% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Iran (X tons), together constituting a 29% share of total imports. Morocco (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Palestine (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences imports into Turkey stood at +1.9%. At the same time, Palestine (+30.5%), Lebanon (+23.8%), Morocco (+11.0%), Iran (+10.9%), Jordan (+9.3%), Tunisia (+8.1%) and the United Arab Emirates (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Palestine emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +30.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-24.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Morocco, Jordan, Tunisia and Palestine increased by +25, +13, +6.2, +2.4, +2, +1.6 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Iran ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 74% of total imports. These countries were followed by Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Lebanon and Palestine, which together accounted for a further 11%.

Among the main importing countries, Palestine, with a CAGR of +25.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 13%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Palestine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+18.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
