Production of Meat of Camels and Other Animals in MENA

Moreover, camel and other animal meat production in Saudi Arabia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Morocco (X tons), twofold. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 14% share.
In Saudi Arabia, camel and other animal meat production increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+0.7% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+3.6% per year).
The average camel and other animal meat yield contracted to X kg per head in 2022, which is down by -3.2% compared with the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the camel and other animal meat yield attained the maximum level at X kg per head in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In 2022, number of animals slaughtered for camel and other animal meat production in MENA amounted to X heads, approximately reflecting 2021 figures. In general, the number of producing animals, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the number of producing animals increased by 1.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, this number hit record highs at X heads in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, producing animals failed to regain momentum.

Exports in MENA
In 2022, overseas shipments of meat of camels and other animals decreased by -13.2% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 118%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, camel and other animal meat exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 82% of total exports in 2022. Oman (X tons) took a 9.5% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Turkey (5.4%).
The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the meat of camels and other animals exports, with a CAGR of +35.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Oman (+18.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Turkey (-6.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+78 p.p.) and Oman (+7.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Turkey (-4.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest camel and other animal meat supplier in MENA, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates stood at +33.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (-1.4% per year) and Oman (+19.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 61% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports of Meat of Camels and Other Animals
Imports in MENA
In 2022, approx. X tons of meat of camels and other animals were imported in MENA; with an increase of 60% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 124% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, camel and other animal meat imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a measured expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 81%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Oman (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together constituting 80% of total imports. Morocco (X tons) held a 7.1% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Yemen (6.3%). Qatar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +137.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Oman ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported meat of camels and other animals in MENA, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Oman amounted to +36.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (+25.9% per year) and Morocco (+94.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -27.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 69%.
