Melon Seed Market Size in MENA

The MENA's melon seed market shrank to $X in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a noticeable descent. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Melon Seed Production in MENA

In value terms, melon seed production declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 65% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Iran (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of melon seed production, accounting for 86% of total volume. Moreover, melon seed production in Iran exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Turkey (X tons), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Iran stood at -1.6%.

In 2022, the average melon seed yield in MENA reached X kg per ha, increasing by 2.7% compared with 2021. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 9.5%. Over the period under review, the melon seed yield attained the maximum level at X kg per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of melon seed were harvested in MENA; almost unchanged from 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 42%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the melon seed harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Melon Seed Exports

Exports in MENA

For the fifth consecutive year, MENA recorded growth in overseas shipments of melon seed, which increased by 10% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 153% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, melon seed exports shrank to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -6.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the major exporter of melon seed in MENA, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 85% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Jordan (X tons), making up an 11% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the melon seed exports, with a CAGR of +43.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Jordan (+21.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Egypt (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Turkey and Egypt increased by +33 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest melon seed supplier in MENA, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Jordan ($X), with an 8.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey amounted to +9.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Jordan (+16.1% per year) and Egypt (+15.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -13.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a dramatic descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 7.7% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+25.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Melon Seed Imports

Imports in MENA

For the fifth consecutive year, MENA recorded decline in purchases abroad of melon seed, which decreased by -6.6% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports showed a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, melon seed imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 67%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Jordan (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) represented the major importers of melon seed in 2022, resulting at near 20% and 17% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Iraq (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Oman (X tons), together achieving a 49% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (with a CAGR of +56.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported melon seed in MENA, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Iraq, with an 8.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt totaled +202.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Algeria (+20.3% per year) and Iraq (+25.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 46% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 91% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
