The MENA's melon market dropped modestly to $X in 2022, which is down by -4.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a abrupt decline. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Melon Production in MENA

In value terms, melon production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 24%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Turkey (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of melon production, accounting for 46% of total volume. Moreover, melon production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Iran (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Morocco (X tons), with a 14% share.

In Turkey, melon production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Iran (-8.4% per year) and Morocco (-3.1% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of melons in MENA rose markedly to X tons per ha, picking up by 10% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of melons were harvested in MENA; waning by -11.6% on the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 2.1% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the melon harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Melon Exports

Exports in MENA

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of melons, when their volume decreased by -20.3% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, melon exports reduced to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +14.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Morocco (X tons) represented the largest exporter of melons, committing 42% of total exports. Iran (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Turkey (15%), Jordan (14%) and Oman (5.3%). Yemen (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of melons. At the same time, Iran (+18.1%), the United Arab Emirates (+14.4%), Turkey (+12.3%) and Jordan (+11.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +18.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Yemen (-1.1%) and Oman (-7.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Iran (+12 p.p.), Turkey (+9.4 p.p.) and Jordan (+8.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Morocco (-6.4 p.p.) and Oman (-8.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest melon supplier in MENA, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Jordan ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Morocco stood at +2.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Jordan (+13.2% per year) and Turkey (+13.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, rising by 12% against the previous year. Export price indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, melon export price increased by +80.9% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 41%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Yemen (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Melon Imports

Imports in MENA

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of melons decreased by -3% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed notable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 106% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, melon imports stood at $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 70% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented the major importer of melons, mixing up 36% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Qatar (15%), Kuwait (15%) and Bahrain (8%). The following importers - Turkey (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - each finished at a 5.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +13.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Qatar ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 66% share of total imports.

Qatar, with a CAGR of +18.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 3.3% against the previous year. Import price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, melon import price increased by +59.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 30%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
