Molluscs Market Size in MENA

For the third year in a row, the MENA's molluscs market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -1.9% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a noticeable shrinkage. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Molluscs Production in MENA

In value terms, molluscs production reduced modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in MENA

In 2021, overseas shipments of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) increased by 8.5% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, molluscs exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Morocco dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 73% of total exports in 2021. Yemen (X tons) took an 8.2% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Oman (7%). Tunisia (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to molluscs exports from Morocco stood at +5.9%. At the same time, Algeria (+10.2%), Bahrain (+10.0%), Yemen (+3.8%) and Oman (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +10.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-11.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Morocco increased by +13 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest molluscs supplier in MENA, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Oman ($X), with a 3.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Morocco stood at +9.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Oman (+3.8% per year) and Algeria (+21.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 42% against the previous year. Export price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Bahrain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+10.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Molluscs Imports

Imports in MENA

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) increased by 52% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, molluscs imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Morocco was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 44% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 28% share, followed by Turkey (8.4%). Algeria (X tons), Israel (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Oman (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Morocco (with a CAGR of +16.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Turkey ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 81% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +17.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 5.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a mild increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 7.6% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
