The average mustard seed yield surged to X tons per ha in 2022, picking up by 11,523% against 2021 figures. In general, the yield saw a significant increase. As a result, the yield attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of mustard seed in MENA shrank dramatically to X ha, waning by -20% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area showed a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 321% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 85% of total exports in 2022. Israel (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Exports from the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +23.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bahrain (+48.0%), Israel (+23.4%) and Morocco (+17.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +48.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+37 p.p.), Morocco (+2.7 p.p.), Bahrain (+2.6 p.p.) and Israel (+2 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest mustard seed supplier in MENA, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 5.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Bahrain, with a 5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates stood at +23.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+17.0% per year) and Bahrain (+61.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a mild slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Israel ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bahrain (+8.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA
In 2022, overseas purchases of mustard seed increased by 4.7% to X tons, rising for the seventh consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 47%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, mustard seed imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of mustard seed imports in 2022 were Turkey (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons), together resulting at 67% of total import. Algeria (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Israel (X tons). All these countries together took near 15% share of total imports. The following importers - Qatar (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - each reached a 7.9% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +22.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Turkey ($X), Morocco ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 69% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +23.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 18% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Qatar (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
