For the tenth year in a row, MENA recorded growth in overseas shipments of narrow woven fabrics, which increased by 9.7% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +99.9% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, narrow woven fabric exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Turkey prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 85% of total exports in 2021. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 5.8% share, followed by Tunisia (4.8%). Morocco (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to narrow woven fabric exports from Turkey stood at +9.6%. At the same time, Morocco (+21.3%), the United Arab Emirates (+4.9%) and Tunisia (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +21.3% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey increased by +11 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest narrow woven fabric supplier in MENA, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 9.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey stood at +4.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+2.1% per year) and Morocco (+18.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, rising by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a perceptible decrease. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (-0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA

In 2021, the amount of narrow woven fabrics imported in MENA skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 21% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, narrow woven fabric imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons), distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) were the major importers of narrow woven fabrics, together making up 74% of total imports. The following importers - Egypt (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Iran (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Israel (X tons), Djibouti (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Djibouti (with a CAGR of +10.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest narrow woven fabric importing markets in MENA were Tunisia ($X), Turkey ($X) and Morocco ($X), together accounting for 63% of total imports. Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Algeria, Iran, Djibouti, Iraq and Yemen lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

Djibouti, with a CAGR of +19.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 63%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
