Newsprint exports surged to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 43% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 193%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, newsprint exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 131%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the major exporter of newsprint, achieving 84% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), constituting a 13% share of total exports.
The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the newsprint exports, with a CAGR of +26.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkey (+6.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+68 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest newsprint supplier in MENA, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates totaled $X per ton.

Imports in MENA
For the tenth year in a row, MENA recorded decline in overseas purchases of newsprint, which decreased by -7.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a abrupt decline. The smallest decline of -6.5% was in 2013. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country
Turkey represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 39% of total imports. Israel (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Egypt (X tons) and Algeria (X tons). All these countries together took near 47% share of total imports. Morocco (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Turkey decreased at an average annual rate of -13.1% from 2012 to 2022. Israel (-7.0%), Algeria (-7.7%), Egypt (-8.8%), Morocco (-9.8%), Tunisia (-10.6%) and the United Arab Emirates (-14.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Israel, Egypt and Algeria increased by +8.3, +6.1 and +5.5 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported newsprint in MENA, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Israel ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 19% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey amounted to -11.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Israel (-5.0% per year) and Egypt (-7.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 34% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
