In 2022, shipments abroad of non-citrus fruits not elsewhere classified decreased by -26.1% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total exports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 26%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, non-citrus fruits not elsewhere classified exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Turkey was the major exporter of non-citrus fruits not elsewhere classified in MENA, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 43% of total exports in 2022. Yemen (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by Egypt (14%), Syrian Arab Republic (9.3%) and Tunisia (4.6%). Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Israel (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tunisia (+34.9%), Yemen (+10.0%) and Syrian Arab Republic (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +34.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-1.5%), Saudi Arabia (-7.8%) and Israel (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+9.4 p.p.), Yemen (+7.9 p.p.), Tunisia (+4.3 p.p.) and Syrian Arab Republic (+4.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Israel (-5.5 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (-6.2 p.p.) and Egypt (-8.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Turkey ($X) and Yemen ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 77% of total exports. Israel, Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.

Among the main exporting countries, Tunisia, with a CAGR of +25.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Non-citrus fruits not elsewhere classified imports reduced to X tons in 2022, waning by -4.3% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-citrus fruits not elsewhere classified imports shrank to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

Saudi Arabia was the main importer of non-citrus fruits not elsewhere classified in MENA, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 62% of total imports in 2022. Iraq (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the United Arab Emirates (7.5%). Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Libya (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-citrus fruits not elsewhere classified imports into Saudi Arabia stood at +13.3%. At the same time, Libya (+27.7%), Lebanon (+26.2%), Syrian Arab Republic (+4.8%) and Bahrain (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Libya emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +27.7% from 2012-2022. Iraq experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-1.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Saudi Arabia, Libya and Lebanon increased by +26, +3.2 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-citrus fruits not elsewhere classified in MENA, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Iraq, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Saudi Arabia totaled +10.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+3.3% per year) and Iraq (-4.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -9.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (+16.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
