Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 41%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of non-ionic surface-active agents (excluding soap) decreased by -7.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, non-ionic surface-active agents (excl. soap) exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 59% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), distantly followed by Bahrain (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Libya (X tons) represented the major exporters of non-ionic surface-active agents (excluding soap), together committing 93% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) and Israel (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Libya (with a CAGR of +185.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest non-ionic surface-active agents (excl. soap) supplier in MENA, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bahrain ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates stood at +26.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bahrain (+94.7% per year) and Turkey (+5.8% per year).

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 14% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 30% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+10.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of non-ionic surface-active agents (excluding soap) increased by 18% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, non-ionic surface-active agents (excl. soap) imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Turkey was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 43% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together constituting a 34% share of total imports. The following importers - Algeria (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.

Imports into Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Jordan (+23.0%), Algeria (+16.7%), the United Arab Emirates (+12.6%), Saudi Arabia (+11.4%), Iraq (+8.3%) and Iran (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Jordan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +23.0% from 2012-2021. Israel experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+5.3 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (+4.2 p.p.), Turkey (+2.6 p.p.), Algeria (+2.6 p.p.) and Jordan (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Israel (-3.3 p.p.) and Egypt (-6.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-ionic surface-active agents (excluding soap) in MENA, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey totaled +3.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (+15.1% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+9.4% per year).

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, growing by 14% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
