Exports in MENA

For the fifth consecutive year, MENA recorded growth in shipments abroad of non-medical x-rays, which increased by 12% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 57%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, non-medical x-ray exports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 64%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the largest exporter of non-medical x-rays in MENA, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 66% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Israel (X tons), achieving a 29% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the non-medical x-rays exports, with a CAGR of +26.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Israel (+18.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+26 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Israel (-2.3 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (-15.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Israel ($X) remains the largest non-medical x-ray supplier in MENA, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Israel totaled +21.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+30.3% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-10.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -12.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 56%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Non-Medical X-Ray Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2021, the amount of non-medical x-rays imported in MENA contracted to X tons, falling by -6.3% against the year before. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -25.9% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 33%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-medical x-ray imports totaled $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) was the key importer of non-medical x-rays, generating 32% of total imports. Qatar (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Israel (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 51% share of total imports. Bahrain (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-medical x-ray imports into Turkey stood at +9.0%. At the same time, Kuwait (+36.2%), Israel (+5.2%), Saudi Arabia (+4.9%) and Qatar (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +36.2% from 2012-2021. The United Arab Emirates and Bahrain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Turkey (+9.2 p.p.) and Kuwait (+5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Qatar and the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -4.3% and -5.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 51% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Qatar, Israel, Kuwait and Bahrain, which together accounted for a further 24%.

Kuwait, with a CAGR of +27.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 7.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Qatar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bahrain (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
