In 2021, shipments abroad of nuts (prepared or preserved) increased by 16% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after three years of decline. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, nuts (prepared or preserved) exports rose significantly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Exports by Country

Turkey prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 84% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Iran (X tons), constituting a 5.4% share of total exports. The following exporters - Lebanon (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) - together made up 7.3% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to nuts (prepared or preserved) exports from Turkey stood at +3.9%. At the same time, Syrian Arab Republic (+15.6%), Iran (+14.5%) and Israel (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Syrian Arab Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +15.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Lebanon (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Iran increased by +3.2 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest nuts (prepared or preserved) supplier in MENA, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with a 3.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Lebanon, with a 2.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey amounted to +3.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Israel (+6.9% per year) and Lebanon (-0.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA

For the third year in a row, MENA recorded growth in purchases abroad of nuts (prepared or preserved), which increased by 1.1% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, nuts (prepared or preserved) imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 31%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) represented roughly 45% of total imports in 2021. Israel (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.1% share, followed by Kuwait (5.4%) and Morocco (5.2%). The following importers - Yemen (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Oman (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and Libya (X tons) - together made up 25% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Yemen (with a CAGR of +36.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest nuts (prepared or preserved) importing markets in MENA were Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Iraq ($X), with a combined 47% share of total imports. Israel, Kuwait, Turkey, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Libya, Yemen, Syrian Arab Republic and Tunisia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

Yemen, with a CAGR of +31.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 33%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
