For the third consecutive year, MENA recorded growth in overseas shipments of oils and other products of the distillation of high temperature coal tar, which increased by 28% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +63.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, oils from coal tar exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Yemen (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together achieving 76% of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 17% share of total exports. The following exporters - Iran (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - each accounted for a 3.4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Yemen (with a CAGR of +35.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest oils from coal tar supplying countries in MENA were Yemen ($X), Turkey ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), together accounting for 88% of total exports.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +33.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 9.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a deep reduction. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (-1.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Oils And Other Products Of The Distillation Of High Temperature Coal Tar
Imports in MENA
In 2021, supplies from abroad of oils and other products of the distillation of high temperature coal tar decreased by -35.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports showed a mild slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, oils from coal tar imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a mild downturn. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 76% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons) and Israel (X tons), together constituting a 16% share of total imports. The following importers - Tunisia (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) - each finished at a 4.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to oils from coal tar imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at -2.0%. At the same time, Israel (+49.9%), Turkey (+25.0%) and Saudi Arabia (+13.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +49.9% from 2012-2021. Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey and Israel increased by +9.5 and +5.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported oils and other products of the distillation of high temperature coal tar in MENA, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Israel, with a 4.1% share.
In the United Arab Emirates, oils from coal tar imports shrank by an average annual rate of -1.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+21.4% per year) and Israel (+35.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, surging by 127% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Israel ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
