From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +30.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Israel ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 50% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Turkey, Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Iraq, Oman, Algeria, Jordan and Bahrain, which together accounted for a further 42%.
Among the main importing countries, Egypt, with a CAGR of +27.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -2.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Bahrain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
