Imports in MENA

In 2022, the amount of organic derivatives of hydrazine or of hydroxylamine imported in MENA reduced to X tons, with a decrease of -8.4% on the previous year. Overall, imports saw a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hydrazine and hydroxylamine derivatives imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +57.9% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Israel represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 45% of total imports. Turkey (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by the United Arab Emirates (16%), Egypt (5.4%) and Iran (4.9%). Morocco (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Israel decreased at an average annual rate of -4.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iraq (+16.5%), Morocco (+6.6%), Turkey (+4.4%) and the United Arab Emirates (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +16.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Iran (-2.4%) and Egypt (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+7.4 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+6.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Israel (-13.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest hydrazine and hydroxylamine derivatives importing markets in MENA were Turkey ($X), Israel ($X) and Iran ($X), with a combined 77% share of total imports. The United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Morocco and Iraq lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

Iraq, with a CAGR of +21.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 31% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 31% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
