Turkey (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of other cereals production, accounting for 78% of total volume. Moreover, other cereals production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tunisia (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Turkey totaled +8.7%.

The average other cereals yield shrank slightly to X tons per ha in 2021, which is down by -1.5% on the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the yield increased by 8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the other cereals yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020, and then fell slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the harvested area of other cerealses in MENA dropped modestly to X ha, standing approx. at the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 17%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to other cereals production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports in MENA

In 2021, exports of other cerealses in MENA reduced dramatically to X tons, waning by -22.3% on 2020 figures. In general, exports, however, recorded a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 178% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, other cereals exports plummeted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 72% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Iran (X tons) represented roughly 67% of total exports in 2021. Israel (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Palestine (X tons) and Turkey (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 26% share of total exports. The following exporters - Egypt (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +97.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest other cereals supplying countries in MENA were Palestine ($X), Israel ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together comprising 78% of total exports. Iran, Egypt, Turkey and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

Among the main exporting countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +95.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 3.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 92%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Palestine ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+9.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA

In 2021, imports of other cerealses in MENA dropped remarkably to X tons, waning by -28.1% against 2020. In general, imports saw a slight decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 139% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, other cereals imports dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Yemen (X tons) was the major importer of other cerealses, making up 45% of total imports. Oman (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Palestine (X tons), Israel (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 44% share of total imports. Kuwait (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Yemen was also the fastest-growing in terms of the other cerealses imports, with a CAGR of +90.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Oman (+69.4%), the United Arab Emirates (+19.0%), Kuwait (+11.3%) and Israel (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Palestine (-17.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Yemen (+45 p.p.), Oman (+14 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+5.8 p.p.), Israel (+2.5 p.p.) and Kuwait (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Palestine (-55.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Palestine ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported other cerealses in MENA, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Israel ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Palestine totaled -3.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Israel (+7.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+22.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 238% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Palestine ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
